How to Measure Ring Size for Children

Buying a ring for a child is a beautiful way to mark special milestones, such as a baptism, a religious ceremony, a birthday, or passing down a family heirloom. However, measuring a child's finger presents unique challenges.

Children have softer skin, smaller hands, and—most importantly—they are constantly growing. A ring that fits today may become dangerously tight within a year.

Here is a guide on how to safely measure a child's ring size and what to keep in mind.

Child Ring Size Chart Reference

Children's ring sizes are much smaller than adult sizes. They typically range from US size 0 to 4.

Age Group (Approx.) US Ring Size MM Circumference
Newborn to 6 Months Size 0 36.5 mm
6 Months to 1 Year Size 1 39.1 mm
1 to 2 Years Size 1.5 – 2.0 40.4 – 41.7 mm
2 to 4 Years Size 2.0 – 2.5 41.7 – 42.9 mm
4 to 6 Years Size 3.0 44.2 mm
6 to 8 Years Size 3.5 – 4.0 45.5 – 46.8 mm
8 to 12 Years Size 4.0 – 5.0 46.8 – 49.3 mm

Note: This chart is a general reference. Children's growth rates vary significantly.

Tips for Measuring Children Safely

  • Use Our Screen Sizer: Since kids can be squirmy, placing a ring they already wear on a screen is much easier than wrapping their finger with paper or string.
  • The Paper Strip Trick: If you must measure their finger, do it while they are calm or watching a video. Wrap a piece of paper gently around the base of their finger, mark the overlap, and measure it.
  • Safety First (Avoid Choking Hazards): For infants and toddlers, only allow them to wear rings under close adult supervision. Rings can slip off easily and become choking hazards.
  • Plan for Growth: Children grow quickly. Never buy a ring that is snug. Buy a size that is slightly loose (about a half-size larger) so they can wear it for a longer period. If they outgrow it, you can transition it to a necklace chain.
