Purchasing an engagement ring is a monumental milestone. Between selecting the metal, choosing the diamond cut, and setting a budget, it is easy to overlook the most practical element: the ring size.
Proposing with a ring that won't go on her finger—or one that slides off into the grass—can break the magic of the moment. This guide will walk you through the essential sizing tips every buyer needs to know before purchasing an engagement ring.
Sizing by Engagement Ring Style
Not all engagement rings are created equal. The design of the ring determines how easy it is to adjust later if your measurement isn't perfect.
- Solitaire Rings (Easiest to Resize): A classic solitaire ring features a single diamond on a plain metal band. Because there are no stones set into the band itself, a jeweler can easily cut and resize it up or down by several sizes.
- Pavé and Channel Bands (Moderate Difficulty): Pavé bands have small accent diamonds embedded along the sides. Resizing these rings is trickier. If you size them down too much, the metal curves, loosening the prongs and causing the small diamonds to fall out.
- Eternity Bands (Impossible to Resize): Eternity bands feature diamonds wrapping around the entire circumference. Because there is no plain metal section, these rings cannot be resized. If you choose an eternity band, your size estimate must be 100% accurate.
